Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology-Application Procedure

Admission

The Division of Psychology admits four to six new students in the fall of each year to the PhD Program. We value demographic, gender, and ethnic/racial diversity in our incoming classes. We encourage you to apply to our program if you meet the following requirements:

  • An undergraduate grade point average in your major field of 3.2 or above on a 4.0 scale
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) verbal, quantitative, and advanced psychology scores above the 75th percentile
  • Undergraduate course work consistent with a major in psychology, including experimental psychology, abnormal psychology, statistics, and research design
  • At least one year of clinical experience—paid or voluntary, service or research oriented
  • For international students, Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores

Application Procedure

To be admitted to the Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology, candidates must apply for admission to two divisions of Northwestern University: the Feinberg School of Medicine and the Graduate School.

  • To apply to the Feinberg School’s Division of Psychology, print out the Doctoral Program Application on this Web site. After completing the application, mail two copies with the supporting materials in one package to the Division of Psychology. An application checklist of all materials to be sent to the Feinberg School of Medicine is located at the bottom of the Doctoral Program Application.
  • To apply to the Graduate School, go to www.tgs.northwestern.edu/graduate. Choose Admission and then choose Apply Online and follow the instructions.
  • Because this website contains complete program information, no additional materials are available for mailing. Should you have further questions about our program or the application process after thoroughly reviewing the website, please contact the Division of Psychology admissions assistant at 312/908-8262 or send an e-mail to clinpsych@northwestern.edu .

Deadline

The Division of Psychology application forms and all supporting materials must be received no later than the end of the business day on Monday, December 15, 2008. (We recognize that your GRE scores may be late.) After we receive your Division of Psychology application form, we will try to keep you informed of any additional items missing from your file. However, applicants bear the final responsibility for ensuring that their files are complete by the deadline. Applicants must request all materials sent from outside sources (transcripts, letters of recommendation, GRE scores, etc.) in sufficient time to allow delivery before the deadline. They also must provide each source with the correct mailing address for all items. The correct mailing address is: Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine, 710 North Lake Shore Drive, Abbott Hall - Room 1205, Chicago, IL 60611. The deadline is rigidly enforced to allow time for the department to carefully evaluate each applicant’s materials.

All persons reapplying must resubmit all application materials as we do not retain previously submitted application files.

Graduate Record Examinations

Contact the Graduate Record Examinations and request that your GRE scores be reported directly to our program. The institutional code number for Northwestern University is 1565 and the department/major field code number for clinical psychology is 2001.

No application will be considered without scores reported for the verbal, quantitative, and subject test in advanced psychology. If all three GRE scores do not reached us by January 19, 2009, your application may not be processed for admission.

Interview

We will begin evaluation of all completed applications during the third week of January. Your application will pass through several independent evaluations before a decision is made about whether to grant a personal interview. We will contact applicants selected for interviews.

An interview is required of applicants who are eventually admitted to the Division of Psychology. All interviews take place on the Chicago campus in late February. Interviewees must pay their own travel and lodging expenses. Applicants invited for interviews may inquire with the admissions assistant (see Contact Information)about the availability of low cost dormitory lodging on campus; you may also have the option of housing with current students. Details are available only if you are contacted for an interview.
